Its also a great place to pick up where you left off if you've been a long time away from ballet. The class will cover basic positions of the body, directions of movement and how to move with good posture and strength. We will learn the fundamental movements of ballet including transfer of weight and train our minds to be quick and our bodies to be long and strong. No experience necessary for this class.

INTRODUCTION TO CONTEMPORARY MOVEMENT & IMPROV
Kyla Paul

If you usually dance standing straight up then this class is for you. Introduction to contemporary movement and improv is meant to shake up those who are used to structured styles such as ballet, ballroom, and musical theatre. This class will challenge you to break down that upright posture and find what grounds you in your movement. In the warm up we will go over rolling through the spine, deep plies, head tale connections and more. Engaging our shoulders, back, and abs to facilitate strong, powerful movement. For the rest of the class we will create a dance together. Starting with learning modern & contemporary phrases, dancers will then be lead through improvisation exercises and scores that can be applied across genres & settings to bring sophistication and originality to any piece.

ADVANCED CONTEMPORARY
Don Obviar
Instructor Bios
Jennifer Ruest has been teaching dance in VT since 2003. A Connecticut native, she graduated from ECSU and Hartford Conservatory with a focus on all dance forms. She fell in love with tap and the history behind it. Jennifer has had the privilege of learning from many of taps historic greats and continues to keep challenging the norm while keeping history alive. She is very much looking forward to teaching at Spotlight and stomping it out with some tappers.
Vanessa (V) Mazur received their Bachelor of Music Degree from Cornish College of the Arts in 2007. In 2009 V became certified in Vinyasa style yoga from Samadhi Yoga Studio, and has been teaching yoga and bootcamp style fitness classes on and off for 7 years. Upon moving to Vermont from Seattle, WA in 2011 V discovered the Spielpalast Cabaret and has been dancing with the show for the past 8 years, and has been the Emcee for Spielpalast for the past 3 years. V began their love of dance at the age of 2, and has continued dancing ever since. Though trained extensively in Ballet, Jazz, Tap, and Ballroom V especially enjoys Cabaret jazz and Burlesque as they are both an excellent platform for creativity, and the opportunity to incorporate comedy, acting, and character development. V is a comedian, writer, and non-professional chef which is shared in their blog sprinkleofsage.com and somewhat daily Instagram, and Facebook posts to ensure the world gets to have a good laugh.
Kyla Paul grew up in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont and began dancing at the age of four. Kyla has performed with many companies around the Burlington area including Lyric, Neat with a Twist, Farm to Ballet, and Ballet Vermont. Her most notable roles were Judy Haynes in White Christmas (2015), principal dancer in Farm to Ballet (2015-2017), and choreographer for Neat with a Twist’s 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at the Vermont Comedy club this past spring. Throughout her life Kyla has studied many dance styles including ballet, hip-hop, jazz, tap, and modern. Kyla attended the BFA dance program at Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia before finishing her degree in education with a minor in dance at UVM. During her time as an adult dancer and choreographer she has most enjoyed pushing her dancers out of their comfort zones to find new ways of moving outside of any particular genre.
